It's human nature to re-invent the wheel periodically. Recognizing and learning from past attempts improves the odds that the new wheel will be better than the old.
"DEC is Dead, Long Live DEC" by Ed Schein explains the life of Digital Equipment Corporation,
where one of us (Colin) spent over 20 years in both engineering and professional services organizations.
The book describes how DEC started, how it grew, and how it died, while pointing out that its legacy
clearly lives on in other companies and organizations. "The DEC story is...a story of how technology,
organizational growth, and business functions such as strategy, marketing, and finance not only
interact with one another but are deeply colored by the cultural forces that are at play in the
organization." There is still much that we can all learn from its many successes: technical,
human, and organizational.
